Bridging Farms and Factories: Apon Bazaar Partners with the Department of Agricultural Marketing to Deliver Affordable Nutrition to Industrial Workers

On March 23, 2025, Apon Bazaar entered into a strategic partnership with the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) under the Government of Bangladesh to address one of the most pressing yet underacknowledged challenges facing the industrial workforce: access to affordable, nutritious food.

A Letter of Agreement (LOA) was formally signed between Nasir-Ud-Daula, Director General of DAM, and Saif Rashid, Founder and Managing Director of Apon Bazaar, at the DAM headquarters in Dhaka. The agreement paves the way for Apon Bazaar to procure perishable food items such as eggs, poultry, beef, fish, fruits, and vegetables directly from farmer and seller groups nationwide.

This initiative enables a direct connection between Bangladesh’s agricultural producers and its industrial labor force, aligning with national objectives around food security, rural development, and worker welfare.

Addressing Nutritional Insecurity Among Industrial Workers
Despite powering one of Bangladesh’s most vital export sectors, many workers in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry and other industrial sectors continue to face significant nutritional challenges. Calorie-dense but nutrient-poor diets remain common due to limited access to fresh, affordable produce. Over time, this contributes to serious health consequences, including anemia, chronic fatigue, and reduced immunity.

The implications are not limited to individual well-being. National-level studies indicate that food insecurity among workers leads to increased absenteeism, lower productivity, and a GDP loss of up to 7.9 percent due to anemia alone.
Through this collaboration, Apon Bazaar aims to mitigate these outcomes by offering safer, fresher, and more affordable food options—directly at the point of need.

A Public-Private Model Rooted in Impact
In remarks delivered during the signing ceremony, Nasir-Ud-Daula, Director General of DAM, emphasized the need for a service-oriented approach.
“This initiative offers an opportunity to build a direct link between farmers and consumers. But for it to be successful, all parties involved must remain guided by a commitment to public service rather than profit.” This sentiment reflects the underlying philosophy of the partnership: that food systems should serve the broader interest of the nation—supporting both rural producers and urban laborers—rather than operate solely for commercial gain.

Advancing Apon’s Mission
Founded in 2017, Apon Bazaar is a social enterprise committed to improving the lives of industrial workers in Bangladesh. Through a growing network of digital and physical Fair Price Shops, Apon provides access to over 2,200 essential products at discounted prices. With the launch of its 44th outlet in early 2025, Apon now serves approximately 200,000 workers across the country.

Speaking about the new partnership, Saif Rashid, Founder and Managing Director of Apon Bazaar, said:
“Food insecurity is not only a question of access—it is a question of equity. Through this initiative, we are not only easing the financial strain on workers, but also promoting sustainability in agriculture by sourcing directly from Bangladesh’s farmers.”
By eliminating intermediaries and ensuring price transparency, the collaboration is designed to benefit all stakeholders: farmers receive fairer compensation, while workers gain access to safer and more nutritious food at a lower cost.

A Step Toward Systems-Level Change This partnership represents more than a logistical adjustment. It is a structural realignment—an opportunity to demonstrate how strategic collaboration between public institutions and mission-driven enterprises can create meaningful, scalable impact.

By addressing nutritional access through direct sourcing, the DAM–Apon partnership supports multiple national priorities such as enhancing food security, strengthening rural agricultural systems, improving industrial productivity and advancing equitable economic development.
As Apon Bazaar continues its expansion, this collaboration serves as a critical inflection point—reaffirming the organization’s long-standing commitment to holistic worker wellbeing and inclusive growth.

Conclusion
The strength of Bangladesh’s industrial economy rests on the shoulders of its workforce. Ensuring their access to safe and nutritious food is not a peripheral concern; it is a foundational requirement for sustainable national progress. This partnership between Apon Bazaar and the Department of Agricultural Marketing marks a significant step forward in reimagining the country’s food systems.
